Learn
Tone is the writer's attitude. Look for loaded adjectives, contrast, exaggeration, and what the writer chooses to praise or question.
Examples
- ‘A welcome improvement’ suggests support.
- ‘Another avoidable delay’ suggests criticism or frustration.
- ‘Perhaps the notice could have been clearer’ suggests polite concern.
Common mistake
Do not decide tone from one neutral word; use a pattern of language in the passage.
