An inference is a sensible conclusion based on clues. It is not a guess: you should be able to point to words that support it.
Examples
- Empty seats and a delayed sign suggest a late bus.
- A student rereads notes before a test may feel nervous or prepared.
- A wet pavement and umbrellas suggest that it has rained.
Common mistake
Choose the conclusion supported by the text, not the most dramatic possibility.
